Do you think our laws are stringent enough for criminals, especially murderers, and child molesters?

Do we need more stringent laws as a deterrent? Some other country's, ie singapore, have laws that fit the crime. They're crime rate is nothing compared to ours. Should we take lessons from some of these othere countries? I lived in Singapore for 2 1/2 years so I do have first hand experience.
