I'm having a problem with my cat digging the base of her ear?

It's a 12 year old cat and I've had her since she was a kitten.so giving it away or taking it to a vet at this time is not an option. But I have found out that her ear is full of wax and I tink this coud be the problem. Any idea's on how to loosen up the wax and get it out
