Is Islam about peace or violence?

I'm too lazy to read the Koran for myself, but I hear two arguments. One is that Islam is a peaceful religion and the other side speaks of infidels & cleansings, etc. That leads to another question. Are there such thing as muslim extremists or are they actually the most devout followers of Mohamed?
